A Day in the Life of a Business Analyst

One of the contracts we've been working on this summer involves business analysis with a start-up technology company. It has been a blast. We (Brett and Leila) have had the chance to work together and play off of each other's strengths.

So what does a business analyst do? Well, here are just a few of the responsibilities we have on our plates in a typical day:

  • Discuss and review an existing system to determine what the customer wants the system to do that it doesn't do now
  • Meet with a customer to gather requirements for a new system build and document our findings in a business requirements document (BRD)
  • Separate the "must-haves" from the "nice-to-haves" when it comes to system functionality
  • Participate in cross-functional planning meetings (with developers, project managers, and sales staff) to prioritize projects
  • Create and implement a plan for staffing and organizing a support desk
  • Assess internal system use and recommend improved software solutions or ways to consolidate.

So, a business analyst's role fits nicely within the Think side of our service disciplines. If any of those responsibilities sound like something your organization needs, give us a ring!
